Tony Mowbray has bought the Dutch-taught defender twice, despite him having scored three own goals in a season
West Brom manager Tony Mowbray first spotted Martis when he was playing for Darlington and, impressed by his aerial dominance and long-range passing, took him to Hibernian in 2006, where he won the CIS Cup. A year later, Mowbray – by now at West Brom – returned to his old stamping ground to sign him once more for a fee of £50,000.
During his time at Easter Road, Martis earned a reputation for being somewhat error-prone, managing to score no fewer than three own goals in his one term in the SPL. He was also blamed for a Hearts goal in the first 30 seconds of an Edinburgh derby; his manager may not have said much about it, but the player's substitution at half-time spoke volumes.
Despite Mowbray displaying his faith in Martis by taking him to The Hawthorns, the defender made just four appearances during his first season with West Brom, later being farmed out on loan to Scunthorpe.
Martis, who started his career with Dutch clubs Excelsior and PSV, was born in the Caribbean island nation Netherlands Antilles and gained his first international cap for them in 2008.
