From Banfield de Mar del Plata to Peterborough via Wycombe – the ‘Buckinghamshire Maradona’ is living the dream
Energetic and skilful left-winger Torres, possibly the only Argentinian to have both had a trial with Boca Juniors and stacked shelves in Boots, has been dubbed both the ‘Basingstoke Maradona’ and ‘Buckinghamshire Maradona’ during his time in English football.
Formerly with hometown club Banfield de Mar del Plata near Buenos Aires, Torres blew his savings to fund a plane ticket to Brighton in 2004 after the Seagulls had invited him for a trial.
However, he failed to earn a contract at Albion and joined non-league outfits Molesey and Basingstoke before being spotted by Wycombe in 2005.
After two injury-ravaged seasons, Torres excelled for Wanderers in 2007/08, making 46 first-team appearances to help the Chairboys reach the League Two playoffs.
His all action displays caught the eye of Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson who splashed out £150,000 to bring the Argentinian to London Road this summer.
