The Son-in-Law of God and a worthy inheritor of the New Maradona crown
Expecting a son with Diego Maradona’s daughter, Sergio “el Kun” Aguero – the nickname comes from his little brother, who couldn’t properly pronounce the name of cartoon character Kum-Kum the caveman – is already an Argentina regular and was arguably La Liga’s outstanding performer in 2007/2008.
He began his career at Independiente and moved to Atletico Madrid for €25m in 2006 as an 18-year-old. His first season was one of fits and starts, with just flashes of brilliance. His second was stunning.
A creative genius with a low centre of gravity, quick feet and deadly finishing, he almost single-handedly carried Atletico back to the Champions League for the first time in more than a decade.
Despite the predictable millstone of the New Maradona tag, he's actually more like Romario (or indeed Dalglish): short and stocky, he has a large, low-hanging backside, is exceptionally skilful in tight spaces and seems to shoot without needing time to set himself.
Scored 18 goals in 2007-08 and provided plenty of evidence to suggest that he could become the world’s best player.
