Young, pacy winger from the Ajax youth academy - showed flashes of brilliance in first season at the club but more is expected of him
The Dutch winger joined Liverpool in July 2007 and showed just enough promise in his first season to justify his £10m price tag.
The midfielder is a typically confident product of the Ajax Academy: two-footed, he can play comfortably up front or on either wing. He also possesses explosive pace and the ability to beat a man.
Babel made his Ajax debut at just 17, and became Holland’s youngest goalscorer in 68 years when he netted on his international debut in 2005 aged 18. He was on the bench more than he’d like in his first Anfield season, but still managed 49 games and 10 goals.
