Proven goalscorer better off when not playing in the top flight. Yorkshire clubs beware, he tends to coincide with financial meltdown
At 5ft 9ins, Robbie may not be the tallest of strikers, but there is no doubting the striker’s goal-poaching abilities.
He started out at Darlington in 1994 and his 23 goals in 64 appearances secured a move to Bradford City in 1997. There the goals continued during the club’s spells in the Premier League and higher reaches of Division One, but Bradford’s perilous financial position, following relegation from the top-flight, saw them accept a £1m bid from Burnley in 2002.
Again he lived up to the price tag, netting 51 goals in 120 games. Having flopped when given another chance in the top-flight with Birmingham City in 2005, he joined Leeds United, but more West Yorkshire financial problems meant his stay was short-lived and he rejoined Clarets for £250,000 in the summer of 2007.
