An adaptable defender who can also play further forward - and he's on a free, too. No wonder Rafa likes the look of him
Described by Rafa Benitez as “an offensive player with great energy and a winning mentality” Degen was Liverpool’s first signing of summer 2008, arriving from Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer.
The Swiss full-back started his career with Basel before moving to Dortmund in 2005, where he spent three successful years and was a big hit with the fans for his strength and work-rate. A regular fixture with his national team, Degen took part in both World Cup 2006 and Euro 2008.
Able to play down the wing as well as in defence, he’s just the kind of versatile squad member Benitez seems to value.
