The versatile Irishman is one of Carlisle’s longest-serving players and a member of the exclusive club of Cumbrians with more than 300 appearances under his belt. Signed from Blackburn Rovers in August 2001 on a free transfer, Murphy scored the famous goal in the Conference play-off final against Stevenage in 2005 that took the Blues back into the Football League.
A former Republic of Ireland Under-19 and Under-21 player, the Dublin-born defender won his first full cap against Bolivia in May 2007, becoming the first Carlisle player to represent his country since the 1960s, when Northern Ireland were represented by the confusingly-named Eric Welsh.
