Defender

Adaptable and dependable Mozart buff will happily and effectively orchestrate the play from defence or midfield

Paul Scharner arrived in Wigan as a relative unknown from Norwegian club SK Brann during the January 2006 transfer window for £2.5 million.

Since then the Austria international has been a revelation for the Latics, either at centre-back – his preferred position – or in the midfield holding role, the position in which he started his career.

He scored on his Wigan debut in the 2006-07 Carling Cup semi-final, rifling home a thunderbolt shot that has since become a regular sight.

A notable absentee from Austria’s Euro 2008 campaign, he fell out with the Austrian FA back in 2006 following a Roy Keane-style rant over a lack of professionalism.

Not my favourite Wigan defender, but he is solid enough. Completely mental to boot, but is prone to thinking he's the new Franz Beckenbauer!
