"Committed" and "whole-hearted", say fans of the team he plays for. Opponents might describe him slightly differently...
A combative, and at times short-fused, defender who seems to have become part of the furniture at the Hawthorns.
He has been with West Brom for half a decade, usually operating for the Baggies at left-back, and is now the veteran of two promotion-winning campaigns. But he was at Watford for even longer, coming through the Vicarage Road youth system to make his debut at the age of 18 and clocking up north of 250 appearances over seven seasons.
By the time he moved to the Hawthorns from Watford in 2003 for a fee of £250,000, he had already been an England U21 regular, and his form for the Baggies saw him being mooted for a senior cap.
Like Carl Hoefkens on the other flank he loves to push forward, and has also operated as a wing-back when West Brom have opted for a 3-5-2 formation. His current contract runs until the end of the 2008-09 season and there will be few, if any, more committed to the Baggies' cause.
