Midfielder

Having been shackled with a place at right back for a lot of the last two years, Jose Bosingwa should allow Essien his midfield role back

A manager’s dream, whether playing at centre-back, full-back or in his preferred midfield berth, ‘the Bison’ almost always lives up to his nickname. Signed from French champions Lyon in 2005 for a then-club record transfer fee of £24.4m, the Ghanaian combines inexhaustible stamina and drive – he often has to go for a run after games to burn off excess energy – with power, pace and devilish shooting to make the very model of a modern midfield general. In 2006-07, he was voted Chelsea fans’ Player of the Year, while in the same season he finished as runner-up to Freddie Kanoute as African Player of the Year. His sterling performances in the latter half of the 2007-08 almost helped Chelsea overhaul Manchester United.

This guy is a machine. Without him we wouldn't be half as good. He runs, tackles, gets back up and runs again. Real worker

Must have Put Mourinho in dreamland when he worked so hard for the cause in cenre-midfield. The Ghanian still does for Chelsea. An Incredible player whose work-rate is breath-taking. In a Champions league game against shalke in 2007 he ran 8,289 metres (that is over 5 miles). When I heard of this statistic I was amazed, so I read on and noticed that he was subbed with 20 minutes left! He says that it is because of the hours he sleeps. He enough to persuade a coach to pay for his players to have meditation and sleeping classes in training. It is easy to forget what he does so right in a game, he's that good, so he deserves all the credit for what his team achieves.People in football are not so surprised now that Jose spent the money he did on him. Everything about him was destined for the top from the start, even his wonderful personality. He is somebody that allows more attacking players in his side to score goals when he stays back. What an awesome player.

One of the strongest players going, never disapoints and holds the midfield together for Lampard to do what he does so well. Another criminally under-rated player who deserves more recognition.

He's been given an overall work rate of 8.3?! Are you all out of your minds?! It's hard to think of a player with more stamina than Park but Essien is the very embodiment of that. He has horse lungs and never runs out of energy, he works his socks off for whatever team he plays for and it's a travesty that people can't see that!

Not only that but he combines his work rate with dangerous shooting, well-timed challenges, decent short-passing, a good aerial ability and a decent level of pace. He has a versatility that lets him play all over the pitch and had he not been injured, Chelsea would have been battling for 1st place. People talk about Gerrard like a God, Essien isn't far off.
