Midfielder

The experienced midfielder was one of the Premier League’s unsung stars whilst at Southampton. What will he make of League One?

The former Arsenal youngster started his career with Southampton, making his debut against Everton in May 1995.

While a gritty player, the central midfielder possesses fine vision and is an astute link between defence and attack with his crisp passing ability.

He was a regular performer for the Saints in the Premier League and racked up 262 appearances for the club before joining Derby County in August 2006.

Installed as captain in the absence of Michael Johnson, Oakley guided the club to the Premier League, via a 2007 Play Off Final win against West Brom, but with the Rams having signed Robbie Savage in January 2008, Oakley switched to Leicester for £500,000.

Like Leicester, Oakley’s appearance in League One has been a first for him.

Should be captain full time. A born leader and much better than Clemence. Also great goat at Cheltenham.

Tipped to be captain next season. Could well be our heartbeat in midfield next season and could well contribute goals from midfield if he plays in a Frank Lampard-esq position.
