Starting again at Oldham after he couldn't make his presence felt in the Manchester United midfield – but then neither could Juan Seba Veron
It's a big season for Kieran Lee. In summer 2008, having turned 20, he left Manchester United, where he had been for four years, in order to get first-team football at nearby Oldham Athletic.
He was well-regarded enough at Old Trafford to have been named the reserve team captain, but he wasn't threatening the first-team line-up, particularly in his preferred position of central midfield (it doesn't help when the gaffer signs an England international there every year or so for about £16 million). Indeed, when he did near the team it was often as cover at full-back on either side - a versatility that will have improved his education and could serve him well in future. He hardly let anyone down in his rare appearances – he scored the winner for a young United side in the League Cup at Crewe, having steamed up from right-back.
After being named reserve Team Player of the Year for United in summer 2007, he spent four months on loan at QPR but barely scraped half a dozen first-team games. Having moved to Oldham, the 6ft 1in lad from nearby Stalybridge will hope that a fresh start brings new luck.
