Irish striker discovered by Steve Coppell in 2005. Prolific goalscorer earlier in his career, looking to put a poor 2007/08 behind him
A former right-winger with St Patrick’s Athletic, Doyle reverted to his favoured striker’s role at Cork City, where he netted an impressive 25 goals in 75 appearances.
A natural finisher during his time in the Eircom League, he joined Reading for £75,000 in June 2005 and made the step up with ease, netting 18 goals as the club won promotion. His form earned full international recognition and his rapid rise to stardom continued in 2006-07, when he scored 13 Premier League goals in 28 starts.
Like his team-mates, he found goals harder to come by the following season, netting just six times as the club were relegated.
