The new Drogba? Maybe not, but Sunderland haven't had such a successful big fella up top since Niall Quinn was in his pomp
As with a lot of Roy Keane's signings, the transfer fee paid for Kenwyne Jones caused many to suspect that Sunderland had been somewhat fleeced. He had hardly been an unqualified success at Southampton and some said that £6m was way too much to pay. Soon enough, it was being described as a bargain.
The 6ft 2in Trinidadian striker has drawn comparisons with Didier Drogba since making the move to the north east from the south coast; it's not hard to see why, given his pace, immense physical presence and clear knowledge of where the net is. Keane swooped in August 2007 and Jones's goals – and presence in the area, helping others find room to score – indisputably helped keep Sunderland up, as well as helping the man himself to win the Player of the Year award.
