Goalkeeper

Penalty saving expert with three consecutive Golden Gloves to his name, forced to sit at number two for his country behind world's best keeper

The Spain international’s services were secured by his compatriot Rafa Benitez in July 2005 and, barring the odd game, he’s been present in the Liverpool net since.

Reina began his career with Barcelona, making his debut at 18. Limited chances at the Nou Camp saw him seek a loan spell to Villarreal before Benitez came knocking.

Noted for his agile saves, excellent distribution and prowess in penalty shoot-outs, he immediately settled at Anfield. In 2007-08 Reina scooped the Golden Glove award for the most clean sheets in the Premier League – for the third time in a row.

A brilliant goalkeeper with a proven track record of a penalty-saving specialist, Jose 'Pepe' Reina has firmly established himself as the number one spot for the goalkeeper jersey at Anfield. His quick distribution of the ball and his huge throws are outstanding, unmatched to any other goalkeeper in the Premier League. Is he the best goalkeeper in the Premier League? Probably not. However, people must remember the fact that he is only twenty-six years old; that is a very young age for a goalkeeper. Very unlucky with the Spain national team as he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world ahead of him, if not the best, in Iker Casillas. However, if it wasn't for the current generation of excellent Spanish national team players, there is no doubt that he would be in reckoning for consistent caps with his country. Reina has had some excellent games for Liverpool, notably in the FA Cup Final in 2006 and the UEFA Champions League semi-final second-leg at Anfield against Chelsea. Very rarely makes costly errors. Even if he does, crucially, he doesn't seem to be affected by them throughout the rest of the game and simply gets on with the job at hand and trying to make up for it. One possible room for improvement would be his vulnerability at punching and coming for crosses in the box, probably because he isn't the tallest of keepers in the game. Nevertheless, Reina has excellent reflex saves ability in him.
