As an attacking left-back who had caught the eye for Valencia, Celta Vigo on loan and Villarreal, Spain under-21 international Jose Enrique was eyed by several English clubs in the summer of 2007.
Rather than join Manchester City or Liverpool, he chose to move to St James’ Park – where he’d already played in an August 2006 pre-season friendly – for a fee of £6.3m. However, the Spaniard struggled to adapt to a new league and lifestyle and was relegated to a bit-part role – although he forced his way back into the team as Kevin Keegan revived the Magpies later that season.
