Handy in the Championship, the Premier League has proved a step too far for the big lad who started out at Manchester United
A player with extensive experience of the Football League, following spells with Preston, Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Derby, Macken is a powerful, direct striker who is often used in a target-man role. He started his career as a trainee with Manchester United and the best spell of his career came during his time at Deepdale where he scored 74 goals in 229 appearances, twice winning the Player of the Year award. Macken was a member of the Derby side which won promotion to the Premier League in 2007 but having failed to register a single goal in 11 appearances for the club, was loaned out to Barnsley and a permanent deal was clinched for £200,000 in January 2008.
