He didn't like the look of Barnsley much but soon took up the chance to move to Sheffield United.
Ward began his career as a trainee at Aston Villa and was part of the side that played in the 2004 Youth Cup Final against Middlesbrough before turning professional 12 months later after recovering from injuries sustained in a car crash.
After his release from Villa Park he signed a three-year deal at Torquay, but despite 11 goals for the Gulls, a change of ownership and manager at Plainmoor unsettled the forward, paving the way for a move to long-time admirers Chesterfield.
A hamstring problem scuppered Jamie’s chances of making an early impression on Spireites supporters, but his pace and deadly shooting accuracy were on full display in 2007/08 as he banged in 12 league goals to accompany Jack Lester’s 26 as Lee Richardson’s side finished just one place outside the playoffs.
Ward continued to impress for Chesterfield but rejected the opportunity to join Barnsley after failing to agree personal terms in January 2009. However later that month, Ward signed for Sheffield Utd for £330,000.
