Goalkeeper

Not since the Great Dane has their been such a huge presence to grace the United No.1 jersey

Alex Ferguson has faced many challenges during his tenure at United, but none greater than that of trying to replace Peter Schmeichel. Numerous stoppers have tried to fill those colossal boots, but the only one to come close has been giant Dutchman Van der Sar, who signed from Fulham in 2005. The Netherlands international was a calm presence between the sticks as United won back-to-back Premier League titles in 2007 and 2008, and the former Ajax and Juventus player also saved Nicolas Anelka’s penalty to take the 2008 Champions League trophy to Old Trafford.

Van der Sar is an oddity. During the title year of 06/07 and the year before that I thought he was at the end of his rope. He was bobbling balls and knocking them right into the middle of the box leading to easy goals for the opponents. Yet it looked like a renaissance for the Dutchman when he saved those three straight PKs in the Community Shield and led United to the double in 07/08. And this year he even looks better (as does Giggs. . .so go figure!) as he has become, at this point, the all-time European keeper (15 straight clean sheets in all competitions). His defence does help him enormously but. . .on the rare occasions the defense has buckled Van der Sar has been there to clean up. 15 straight clean sheets is too much for just the defense to claim victory for.

Rubbish , no keeper would keep all them clean sheets just because of the defence , clever move by Fergie putting the other keeper in because of Santa Cruz

I don't rate him. His handling in particular is awful and is made to look a lot better than he is by the defence in front of him. He is now seriously over rated, i think Ben Fostor should have been utd number 1 at start of season.
