Some have labelled Carney as the next Brett Emerton, as he can play rightback and right midfield (and because he's an Aussie, obviously)
Brought to England as a teenager by Everton, Carney left the Toffees in 2003 and bounced around Oldham, Halifax and Hamilton before returning home to Sydney FC in 2005.
After becoming a crowd favourite in the A-League, Carney gave England another shot and excelled in a trial with Sheffield United in the summer of 2007. He immediately impressed Bryan Robson with his athleticism, work-rate and ability to perform down both the right and left sides of midfield (he also plays wing-back for his country).
The £46,500 fee was a bargain – a £2.3m bid from Anderlecht was turned down and Bayern Munich have been sniffing around.
