The mercurial and heavily tattooed midfield man once looked destined for the Premier League. sadly it didn't work out that way
Now entering his 15th season as a pro, Darren Currie has made over 400 league appearances and is widely considered to be one of the most talented players in the lower leagues.
After failing to make the grade at West Ham, Currie began to make a name for himself after successful spells at Shrewsbury and Barnet. Always Barnet’s most talented player, Currie left the North Londoners for Wycombe when they were relegated from the football league in a £200,000 deal.
His three years at the Buckinghamshire club began to alert sides further up the football pyramid and Brighton snapped him up in the summer of 2004. Currie made a promising start to life at the South Coast club but neither he nor Brighton could resist the overtures of Ipswich who signed Currie for £250,000 only six months after he had signed for Brighton. He enjoyed a decent spell in Suffolk, playing a regular part for two seasons, falling out of favour during the 06/07 season. After loan spells at Coventry and Derby and a yearlong spell at doomed Luton Town, Currie will start this season at Chesterfield, having turned down an offer to re-join Brighton.
