The former Billericay defender established himself as a regular fixture in the Posh side that won promotion to League One in 2008
The young midfielder was handed his Football League chance by Ferguson before the start of the club’s sensational 2007/08 season. Whelpdale had previously been plying his trade at Isthmian Premier league side Billericay Town, before signing for Posh. He made his debut for the club on the opening day of the season, shining as Peterborough brushed aside Rochdale 3-0.
He went onto become a regular member of Ferguson’s midfield, and scored his first Posh goal in a 7-0 drubbing of Brentford in November 2007. Further strikes against Barnet and MK Dons confirmed his immense promise.
