If you've never heard of Howard, you weren't watching the FA Cup in 2007/08. Anfield anyone? Last-minute winner? Yes, that Brian Howard
The former Southampton and England U20 international made his breakthrough with Swindon Town in 2003, where he featured regularly on their right flank, scoring 10 goals in two seasons. Switching to the centre of midfield following his move to Barnsley, left-footed Howard’s composure on the ball and pin-point passing soon stood out. He helped the Tykes to League One promotion in his first season while his all-action displays helped keep the club in the second tier. In 2007/08 he was handed the club captaincy and revelled in the role, scoring the winner at Anfield ensuring that his name was constantly linked with a move to the Premier League.
After this sepculation died down, Howard initially joined Sheffield United on loan in October 2008, a move which was made permanent in January 2009.
