Signed on a free transfer from Crewe Alexandra in June 2008, Williams began his professional career at Old Trafford as a trainee but despite regular reserve team appearances, he failed to make the grade at Manchester United.
He had loan periods at Coventry, Chesterfield and Crewe before making a permanent switch to Gresty Road in the summer of 2004. The six-foot Mancunian made a total of 137 first team appearances for the Railwaymen over four seasons – despite contracting meningitis – before John Ward took him to Brunton Park on a free transfer.
