No question of experience and quality here. Johnston has played at the top level for both club and country
A hugely-experienced and well-travelled veteran, with stints at Rangers, Hearts, Sunderland, Middlesborough and Bolton among others, the 18-times capped Scotland international hooked up again with his mentor Jim Jefferies in 2004.
Initially he struggled in his traditional right-wing role, but he made more of an impact when Jefferies moved him to an attacking role in the centre.
Two-footed and technically excellent, Johnston was instrumental in the club’s fine seasons in 2005-06 and 2006-07, and although he featured less regularly in 2007-08 through injury, his skill and experience remain a huge asset.
