Defender

Former Old Trafford prodigy settles at Swansea and predictably enjoys spending time on the ball – no bad thing for a defender

A trainee at Manchester United, Tate ended up captaining United’s not inconsiderable reserve side.

However, with his chances of making the first-team blocked by multi-million pound superstars, he joined Swansea on loan and played a major role as the club kept their place in the Football League in 2002/03.

He signed for the Swans permanently in February 2004. Though initially a centre-half, his assurance on the ball meant he could switch easily to right-back and he has even featured in the centre of midfield on occasions. His versatility helped him claim the club's Player Of The Year award in 2005/06.

A former club captain, he played an integral part as the Swans emerged as one of League One’s best teams but missed the decisive penalty in the 2006 League One Play-Off final shootout against Barnsley. In 2007/08, he was restricted to 18 starts as the club won promotion to the Championship.

Again, any League 1 or possibly upper League 2 clubs looking for the most versatile player you've ever seen?

Since joining the club on loan from Man Utd in our darkest hours, Tate has played in every single position apart from left-wing!

Earlier this season against QPR when Dorus De Vries went off with a bad facial injury after a horror challenge on him which somehow didn't get a red card, Tate came onto the pitch in goals. A few shakey moments, but he kept a clean sheet!

He's at his best at either right back or centre back. He's not dependable. He also doesn't handle pressure well (give him a penalty and he'll miss it, give him the captaincy and he gets sent off).

He's very strong in the tackle, and once went on the radio after getting sent off against Scunthorpe, saying that despite the new law on two-footed tackles, he would still go in with both feet because "It's impossible to tackle without two feet." He's good in the air, but a terrible passer and crosser of the ball. His touch is awful, and expect a few mistakes.

But at a lower level he could flourish with a new club.

No doubting Tatey's commitment or passion for the game, or his club loyalty.Dribbling across one's own penalty area tho, leaves many fans closing their eyes in fear.

Hardworking versatile player who has from time to time held the captain armband. Tate or "Beaker" as he is sometimes known as is liked by the fans and is always willing to try his best. His weakness is his lack of concentration from time to time and his ability to make one or two mistakes which can be quiet costly. To sum Alan Tate up simply he is a composed squad player who gives his all for the cause.

Great servant to the club, good header of the ball. Is prone to error. Goals are rare but spectacular.
