Ollie Wright was obliged by his father to leave a turgid league cup match against Sheffield Wednesday at the Baseball Ground in 1989, with 89 minutes on the clock. It was 0-0 and his dad decided it would be a good idea to ‘beat the traffic’. As father and son wandered through the back streets of Normanton towards their car, the unmistakeable quiet roar of the away faithful marked a goal for Wednesday. They were driving through the city centre listening to the commentary on Radio Derby by the time the Rams scored twice in injury time to win 2-1. He has never left a game early since, although during the Jewell era, he was frequently tempted.
Ollie is currently studying the NCTJ foundation course in news journalism.
